Good Morning

Tom and Vicki Lorenz, Chapter Directors

It was great having so many of you turn out for our group photo shoot at the last meeting. The weather really cooperated and the group photo turned out exceptionally well. We had a lot of fun doing it too. You should all be proud to have our group photo on your wall at home. We really have special people in our chapter.

Are you getting ready for the District Rally? For us to get ready, we needed brakes, tires, and an oil change. We’ve been doing a lot of riding lately, so even though it seems like we just changed the oil and put on new tires, those miles add up.  We all need to take the time necessary to be safe on the road and that starts with safe equipment. Make sure your bike is safe as we continue through our riding season. We’ll definitely put more miles on the bikes in the coming months as we go to Mammoth in September and to Tombstone in October. And some of you are planning on squeezing in Laughlin in-between for the Jack-Ass Run. We certainly have busy times ahead.

Speaking of busy, does it seem to you like time is slipping away? This year is passing so quickly we can’t believe it is almost fall. Kids are already starting back to school and it’ll be time to reset the clocks again.

We missed some of you at the movie night. Barb and Dennis provided the venue and prepared all the snacks. Most of us probably over indulged, but hey, it’s movie night. The movie selected was the animated Disney movie “UP”.  It was a fun movie and thoroughly captured everyone’s full attention.

We have some fantastic riding and socializing opportunities coming up and we wouldn’t want you to miss a one of them. Keep your eye on Cathy’s weekly updates for all the latest happenings. While you’re at it, please, please, please send in your registrations to the District Rally and various Chapter events. These are their only fund raisers for the year and it would be great to have all your registrations sent in.  Our participation in their event encourages their participation in our Rally in the Valley.

Ride safe,
Tom and Vicki

Hi Wingers,

Summer is rapidly passing.  How quickly time goes by.   We have made some great memories this year.  But it’s not over – we have lots of great rides and events coming up over the next few months.

I’d like to ask each of you to BOLO (be on the lookout) for new places to ride and new restaurants to try.  It’s really fun to see new places on the calendar or to revisit places that we’ve enjoyed in the past.

A couple of examples of new upcoming experiences are:

  • California District Rally in Mammoth over Labor Day weekend – the riding will be spectacular.
  • Our after meeting ride for September is to the California Museum of Science to see the mummy exhibit.  I bet none of you have done that!  After the museum, we’ll head to Farmer’s Market for lunch.
  • We have a couple of new dinner locations – September 8th we’ll be at Corky’s in Ladera Ranch and October 12th we’ll be at Original Mike’s in Santa Ana.
  • We’ll have a luau at the Jaffke’s house with the proceeds to benefit Ride for Kids on October 2nd.

September, October and November will also bring other chapter’s fundraisers.  It’s very important to support them:

  • September 17th – 19th – Nevada Wings Jackass Convention in Laughlin.  This chapter always supports Rally in the Valley.  In fact, the last time we were in Beatty, members of the chapter rode over 100 miles from Las Vegas to Beatty, paid their registration, visited the vendors and headed home.  They were unable to stay for the Saturday evening program, but told me they really appreciated our support for their Jackass events.
  • September 25th – CA1Z
  • October 9th – CA1V
  • November 6th – CA1C (this is a new chapter and their first rally)
  • November 20th – CA1N Toys for Tots ride

If you know of a great location, you can also plan a weekend ride.  That’s how Rally in the Valley started!  Our trips to Pismo Beach, Tombstone, Lone Pine and Laughlin are always hits.  If you are uncertain about the planning, ask – we’ll be happy to help you.

Also, when planning a dinner/dessert ride, ask if the restaurant will donate a portion of their proceeds to Ride for Kids.

Looking forward to great adventures!

Cathy & George

Chapter Educator

George Neuman, Chapter Educator

We had a good turnout of 18 people at our recent education seminar. The subject
was Motorcycle Touring and we had the benefit of both GWRRA and MSF video
presentations to make the point. Some of the presentations were a bit
disappointing – to me at least - as they seemed to emphasize group riding more
than real touring.

Our next seminar (over by the time you read this) will cover the special
considerations for the “Mature” rider. I think that most of us fall into this
category and should have an understanding of what that implies. The case is
made for aging phenomena that result in slower reflexes, poorer hearing and
eyesight, waning strength, balance, and coordination, etc. We’re not falling apart
but things may be happening slowly that we’re not even aware of. However,
these things should be taken into account when on the road on two or three or
even four wheels.

We are all aware of the greater demands placed on the rider (and co-rider) when
on a motorcycle as compared to driving a car. These are the things that none of us wants to face or even really discuss – but we should not ignore them.

So, as part of my job as educator, we will tackle this unpopular subject and wade
in where no one wants to go. I am as reluctant as the next guy to consider the
influence of aging as I have recently passed another XO decennial birthday. But,
considering the possible alternatives I guess that it’s OK.

Tour Director

Bob Davis

Hi Wingers,

The time is near for the District Rally in Mammoth.  It should be fun and of course the area is great riding country.  There are still rooms left if you have not already made reservations (see District website).
After returning there are several things on the calendar for the month.

* Sept 2nd – 6th District rally Mammoth
* Sept 8th   -  Dinner ride @ Corky’s, LaDera Ranch 6:30PM
* Sept 17th – 18th Jackass Run, Laughlin, NV
* Sept 20th - Staff Meeting @ Denny’s
* Sept 22nd – Dinner ride @ Yen Ching, Orange 6:30PM
* Sept 25th – CA1Z Rally
September is fairly light on activities so you can rest up for October but be sure to check the calendar as it is full of fun rides and other things to do.

See ya all out there.
.
Bob

District Director's Review

Bill and Rene Johnson, District Directors

Whew, here we go. Rene & I and our incredible staff are in the last throws of preparation for the California District Rally. I had no idea how many details that required attending to. I’m sure we have missed a thing or two, but we sure hope the attention to detail on everything else shows how hard we have worked to put on a good show.

Rene & I are very blessed to have a highly charged and very capable staff anxious to get this show on the road. The cool thing is they have insisted Rene & I just hang out and “chill” while they do all the work. Hey, I’m up for that – sort of. Well, they all know what they need to do better than we do, so lets have some fun.

One of our Staff members recently commented, “if you don’t have a great time in Mammoth, you aren’t trying”. How true that is. There are so many things to do in Mono County, several of you are taking mini vacations, and I don’t blame them, we are too. Now its up to you to come out and have some fun.

I would like to warn everyone that with all mountain country, an occasional summer storm could pass through every once in a while. It’s usually a short shower with even some hail, but everything usually dry’s out within an hour or so and the party continues. The nights can drop into the upper 40’s but most days average between 75º & 82º, so please dress accordingly. Tough to handle…..

I would also like to warn everyone that the hotel is located at about 8,000 ft. elevation, so if your not used to it you could get a bit lightheaded. Please be sure to drink lots of water, and just take your time. What the heck, this is a vacation – right?

So pack your bags, we’ll see you at “The Party on the Mountain”

We have had a request from Mona Levig to add boxtop coupons to benefit our schools.

S.P.C.A. is having a Special Event in October at the Huntington Beach Central Park-Dog Park. Details to follow.

Tree People is looking for volunteers to aid in the reforestation of some of the areas hit by fires in the recent past. The sign ups start in November 2010 for next year's efforts. Here is a link to their website.
http://www.treepeople.org/angeles-national-forest-restoration

They are not just looking for tree-planters, but also individuals (or groups) that would greet and register the volunteers. I am planning to sign up anyway and I thought it might be a nice group activity.

Regards, Laura Lampert

If you hear about anything you think that our members or their families or friends might like to participate in beside Gold Wing events, give me a call or send an e- mail.

Funny Bone!

A blonde and her husband are lying in bed listening to the next door neighbor's dog. It has been in the backyard barking for hours & hours.

The blonde jumps up out of bed and says, "I've had enough of this". She goes downstairs.

The blonde finally comes back up to bed and her husband says, "The dog is still barking, What have you been doing?"

The blonde says, "I put the dog in our backyard. Let's see how THEY like it!"
